Mother as I see Her

– Smt.Chandrakala P.Shenoy, B.A., B.L.,  Kayamkulam.

‘Mother’- a very small word, but how significant it is! It sounds small and sweet. Nevertheless, if one wants to know the meaning and depth of the significance, one has to go to Shaktinagar, a paradise of peace and power, which is being visited by all, rich and the poor, the sinner and the saint, the depressed and the downtrodden, irrespective of caste and creed. Shaktinagar is a retreat par excellence for adhyatmic sadhana. It is an asylum for those who seek and for those who suffer.

A casual visit to that blessed place would clearly show that it is something uniquely distinct from a home and an ashram. The worldliness associated with home and the sense of isolation associated with the ashram, both are not there. It is an ever-expanding divine Gurukula, where the Divine is the guiding preceptor and the presiding deity. It is an island of peace in this turbulent world and people from all walks of life go there for peace and salvation.

Shaktinagar is a veritable Kingdom of God on earth, where we can see our Creator and enjoy the bliss of divine presence. So overwhelming is Her presence that even untutored minds are brought into order by just being in the precincts of Shaktinagar. Beholding the divine splendour so tangibly revealed, we can surrender at those Lotus Feet and be saved from the cycle of births and deaths. Shaktinagar is really a ‘Moksha dham’.

This whole world, is as Shakespeare puts it, a stage where everyone has to act the drama of life. But acting life is not so easy as it appears to be. We should act well if we are to be applauded. For this, we should study the art of acting. This technique of acting life can be taught only by one who is well-versed in that art.

Divine Mother Sree Rama Devi, whom today thousands worship as their Deity, has brought about a revolutionary change amidst thousands of Her devotees through Her unsurpassed love and unique teaching.

Mother’s advent in this world is for the uplift of whole mankind. Her power and grace is boundless. It is not circumscribed. Mother’s path is unique. In short, Mother is incomparable.

People who worship Mother do so out of their own experience, faith and conviction. In Her kingdom, there is no compulsion, no force, no threatening. Everything is controlled through Her unseen power. Hers is a reign of love.

What is the secret behind this gigantic power of Mother? This is an open secret which has been proclaimed time and again by saints and mystics. Divinity, experience and exemplary life of dharma constitute Mother’s spiritual authority. No man can describe Mother’s divinity, Her supernatural powers, superconscious states and divine bhavas. They are beyond human comprehension.

In Her role as the Sadhaka, Mother practised all the yogas. But the peculiarity with Her yogas is that She did not retire into any cave or forest or hermitage for the pursuit of yoga. She built Her yoga in the privacy of life’s teeming problems. Home and seclusion both appealed to Her. Even in apparent involvement in life around Her, She was alone and aloof inwardly. Smile and serenity never left Her. Alert always to the call of duty, She was in constant communion with Her own Self. Any time She could withdraw into a splendid isolation of being within Herself. Her spontaneous samadhis, divine bhavas and magnificent personality carry credentials of Her supreme divinity.

Viewed in this context, Shaktinagar is also a vast temple where we worship our Deity. But our worship is not based on hearsay knowledge. Before coming to Divine Mother we did worship gods and goddesses seen in photos-the inspiration of the artist who drew or painted them. But the Deity in Shaktinagar is not the imaginary expression of any artist. You can see the Divine whom you worship and also be convinced of what you see.

Mother’s path is an open path suited for all. It is a path of dharma, a path which Mother has trod Herself. Mother does not command any one to take shelter in caves and woods for the sake of Realization. We can have Realization remaining where we are, provided we have shraddha in Her Teaching and intense yearning in our heart. Mother does not put Her disciples to any test. She does not demand their services. Selfishness, petty-mindedness, love for indulgence, these flee the minds tuned to Divine Mother.

Mother teaches us how to install our home-life on the pedestal of yoga, how we should convert our homes into sacro-sanct ashrams and thereby usher in the Himalayan peace in our homes. According to Her direction, we are not to discard association, for life means association, co-operation, co-existence. What is to be given up is attachment to objects, persons, conditions. Illusionism of the world and escapism from action find no place in Her dynamic teaching. Her advaita is permeated with the elixir of Bhakti. The supremacy of God, Grace and Dharma forms the dominating theme in Her discourses and writings. She is the embodiment of all these three. Mother’s clarion call to seekers is to take active participation in life with constant remembrance and consciousness of the Divine.

The great spiritual movement that has been initiated by Her grace is gradually gaining recognition by the society and revealing little by little its global significance. Mother’s mission is not restricted to any particular region or section of population, not even to our country, India. It is universal in nature, scope and function. Her Teaching like ancient scriptures is valid for all times. Faithful and honest application of Her moral and spiritual commandments will lead us to the vision of the highest. Universal fraternity can emerge only from universal vision.

Messengers of God have made their appearances in the world from time to time. They have sung the glories of God. Devotional literatures that are an inspiration even today constitute their heart’s outpouring. But Mother has come to reveal a path for mankind to follow which is suited to modern conditions. Reinstatement of the dharma, ‘dharmasthapana’ is possible only for Divinity.

The devotional link with Mother has enabled Her devotees to create within their own homes a spiritual paradise. Home as Heaven according to Mother, is not a field for enjoyment, ‘bhogakshetra’; it is a dharmakshetra. Mother’s message of salvation is a standing promise to those who fulfill the law of dharma under Her guidance. Unconditional surrender to God is the pathway to salvation. The electrifying currents of Mother’s spiritual power and message have started operating not only in India but even abroad, as a result of which even foreigners have begun to take refuge at Her Lotus Feet even though Mother has not physically gone to any foreign country.

Inward renunciation is the sine qua non of spirituality according to Mother. the ego, the sense of ‘I and Mine’, the violent passions like anger, greed, attachment, etc, should be eradicated through devotion and discrimination. These are our only enemies who prevent us from feeling the presence of God. Inner manasic prapancha is the main cause for our suffering and deterioration.

Wherever Divine Mother has visited, an adhyatmic centre called the ‘Mandali’ has sprung up and these mandalies where Her devotees congregate for worship and meditation, have become the source of comfort, strength, inspiration for Her devotees. By participating in the Mandali activities we grow spiritually, our devotion to Mother increases, our selfishness diminishes, and we develop the feeling that we are all children of the same Universal Mother.

What the world needs today is the transformation of hearts. The working of the brain alone will not be sufficient to root out the evils. Bothe the brain and heart must work simultaneously for this purpose. In Mother’s system of sadhana, the place is for synthesis, the synthesis of brain and heart. This is what She exhorts Her audience whenever She condescended to address. Mother responds to the call of a child, adult, poor, rich, the sick, the destitute, the sinner, all alike. These differences are in our vision only, not in Mother. for Mother, all are children only. Mother recognizes no sin. Her teaching and discourses abound in positive stress on purity, divinity, holiness, perfection, immortality and omnipotence of the Atman. The sweep of purification automatically comes over us when we give a place for Divine Mother in our heart. Who else other than God incarnate could control and direct the destiny of countless disciples spread all over India and abroad?

Deterioration steps in not because gods are feeble, but because our prayers are powerless. We should not try to weigh God with our worldly possessions. All worldly objects are perishable. As such we can never see God so long as we are slaves to these perishable objects.

Mother’s presence on earth is the greatest boon to mankind. To deny Mother’s all-pervasive divinity perishable. As such we can never see God so long as we are slaves to these perishable objects.

Mother’s presence on earth is the greatest boon to mankind. To deny Mother’s all-pervasive divinity is indeed a sin. We need not sacrifice anything to see Mother. No one who has seen Mother once, ever returned disheartened. Having seen Her and having glimpsed Her divine nature, Her devotees do not have any further urge for wanderings here and there in search of God and peace.  Having listened to Her discourses and personal instructions in sadhana, they do not stand in need of any holy book for guidance. Every word of Mother is a gem of wisdom. Her teaching contains the essence of Vedas and Upanishads.

Brothers and sisters, we are but tiny ripples on the surface of water, which could burst at any time. Man’s life is short, but it is long enough to lead a good life. Within this limited time, let us strengthen our faith, deepen our devotion and stabilize our inner link with the Omnipotent Mother and get freed from the shackles of samsara. Now is the golden opportunity for us, for God is in the form of a Mother accessible to man and woman alike, who approach Him with simplicity of a little child. Our Deity is now before our vision. The ancient yogis and sages had to perform intense tapas to behold a ray of divine radiance. Now with naked eyes, with no strength of tapas to our credit, we are beholding the Divinity and receiving guidance direct from Divinity. Realization of God is the ultimate goal. Where is the question of realization when we have God in our midst! We have only to open our eyes to Truth. Darshan of Mother is a spiritual vision, if there is the enlightenment as to who Mother is. To those who have got this enlightenment, there is no seeking. They revel in their attainment, in their love for God, as Uddhava, Akrura and Sudama and Gopis of Brindavan did in days of yore.

Denial of Truth is man’s fundamental folly. But we should remember that Truth never ceases to be Truth merely because it is denied or ignored. Mother is Truth. She is in all hearts. And She manifests Herself in everyone. But we should also remember that She manifests only in pure hearts.

God is not a concept. He is the Reality. Existence proclaims Him. Every breath of ours is nature’s prayer to her Lord. God is controlling, directing and steering the course of the universe. It is He who has come down to earth, this little planet of ours, in the garb of a Mother. Let us pray to our Deity to tear asunder the veil of ignorance and cement in us the conviction that there is no other God than the One who is with us.

Spiritual Wave

November 17th, 2013

 – Sri K.R.Raghavan Pillai, Vakil

It was the 26th January 1955. Auspicious in itself, as the anniversary of the great and peaceful revolution that has come over this sacred land, it is the most memorable day of my life, the beginning of a great inner revolution. It was on that day, that I had the good fortune to have the darsan of Sri Rama Devi at the Meenakshi Mandir, Trivandrum. It was a thrilling experience. Although indifferent towards the order of Sanyasa, there was something that drew me to the great name and the desire to have a darsan of the Mother was kindled in me as early as December 1953. The chance came two years later.

I was very timid to go to the Mother’s presence and wanted only to have a distant darsan. But in a few seconds, the whole atmosphere cleared and looked welcoming me. At about 6 P.M. I was introduced to Mother who greeted me with her radiant inimitable smile. I sat in front of Mother. She suddenly went into samadhi. It did not last long as expected and the Mother opened her eyes after a minute or two. I prayed for her blessings. She gave me Ram Nam smarana making me repeat ‘ Sree Ram Jaya Ram Jaya Jaya Ram ’ thrice. She asked me to attend the Akhanda Ram Nam yajna the next Sunday which I did. The chanting of Tharaka Mantra in four different tunes from 6 A.M. to 6 P.M., then Sankirthan and the Mother’s discourse, were solemn beyond words and it all elevated me to the regions of the true, the good, and the beautiful.

The seed thus sowed in my heart began rapidly to grow and as a result almost all members of my big family became Mother’s disciples.

We had the second darsan of the Mother in 1956 which gave us the initiative to start a Bhajan Mandir at the residence of Sri T. P. K. Nair at Haripad. When he, a Government officer, was transferred to Quilon, the Bhajan , Mandir was shifted to an out-house at my residence. Poojas and arathi are conducted there twice daily.

On the 4th March 1958, I had darsan of the Mother at the Trichur Mandali on the occasion of the installation of the idols of Sree Rama and Sree Krishna. At the Daridra Narayana Pooja, the Mother sat amidst of hundreds of people and partook of the dishes.

In 1959 on Her way to Kayamkulam, Mother gave us a darsan and graced our Bhajan Mandir with her presence. People from far and near had assembled. As the bhajan proceeded Samadhi set in and when the Mother opened her eyes she gave a discourse in Malayalam.

The ecstasy of Sri Ramakrishna, the exalted eloquence of Sri Vivekananda, and the wisdom of Pathanjali were all there. The members of the audience were appreciably moved and when they left they carried a rare enlightenment and consolation. The influence was immense.

Some months later, we had the good fortune to visit the Mother at Her home in Mangalore when we had the opportunity to have glimpses of Her domestic life. We had glimpses of the simple and austere life of Mother. She was an ideal mother and ideal hostess to us. She personally supervised the arrangements for our comfortable stay. Her daily routine of duties showed that she scrupulously observed what she was teaching. The simplicity of Her home, the calm and the divine atmosphere all round, the sincerity, the punctuality and hospitality of the members all deeply impressed us.

On 7-3-1959 the Sivarathri day, Mother performed Sivalinga Abhisheka with Ganga Theertham and poojas at the Bhajan Mandir at Trivandrum at the request of Swami Sivayogi Sidhananda.

In June 1960, I attended the Mother’s discourses in the Sadhana Mandir sessions at Mangalore, a place of bliss and peace.

The experiences have transformed me like hundreds of others. They have raised a wave of spiritual awakening in me and it is rolling incessantly.

At Sree Rama Devi Mandir

November 3rd, 2013

– Sri M.Narayanan Unni, M.A., B.L.

The celebrations in connection with the opening of Sri Rama Devi Mandir at Cotton Hills, Trivandrum, lasted for seven days from 7th of November to the 13th of November 1956. These were marked by brilliant pageants and moving religious ceremonies. In response to prayers from innumerable hearts, Sadguru Sri Rama Devi blessed the assemblage with her gracious presence. Attached to every detail of the arrangements, there was symbolic meaning. Over the entrance gate to the Mandir was erected a triumphal arch. Beneath hanging clusters of golden coconuts and plumy palm, hundreds of devotees came to worship at the shrine and for darsan of Mother.

From its commanding position from the declivity of a beautiful hill, the Mandir looked like a temple of peace. In the starry nights, it had the appearance of a chariot of flame winged an aerial flight to empyrean regions. Inside the prayer hall, in front of the shrine, were placed the lighted lamps and the censors full of incense. Floral offerings reached up to the peetam for Mother. The prayer hall and the shrine were set off to the finest advantage by the artistic skill of the devotees. The swelling dome of the shrine, and the praying hands of the assembled multitude beneath it, provided a splendid setting for the celebrations.

The celebrations commenced with Ganapathi Homa. Involved in it is a ritual which has wonderful spiritualizing potency. The officiating priests revealed one of the ritualistic worships of Kerala in its pristine purity. Then was the guru-pooja at Meenakshi Mandiram, the residence of Sri T. N. K. Nayar, Bar.-at-law, who is the President of Sri Rama Devi Bhaktha Mandali at Trivandrum. The guru-pooja was offered to the portrait of Divine Mother which was later to be installed in the shrine of the Mandir. The portrait is an artistic triumph, picturising the immortal calm of one of Mother’s samadhis. From Meenakshi Mandiram to the Mandir, the portrait of Mother was brought in procession. In the worship of Sadguru, at the inception of the celebrations homage was done to hoary traditions. During the procession, an awakened interest in the spiritual values of life were observable, in the common spectator and in the casual participant. The impact of a life of divinity, though hidden in the seclusion and retirement of domestic duties, is of incalculable intensity.

The institution which is given pride of place in the system of spiritual discipline taught by Mother is home. Her simple teachings communicate immortal ideas. Conduct and not doctrine is held up as the means to salvation. A complex theory of life of course emerges from the teachings. But the earnest seeker is not trammelled by doctrines and the interpretation is left to individual analysis and self-introspection. Deeply ingrained habits and mental attitudes are gradually eradicated under the impact of her powerful personality. Hers is a unique system of sadhana leading to a yogic integration of faculties. Propensities are curbed and minds are conditioned. Personal pursuits become identical with the highest ideals and most enduring values. By the performance of guru pratishta in the shrine of the Mandir, outward expression was given to the mysterious spiritual concept, namely, Sadguru, in a solemn ritual appropriate to earthly environments. Mr. and Mrs. T. N. K. Nayar, in performing the guru pratishta in the central niche of the shrine made no declaration of faith. The occasion was too solemn for speech. Representing Mother’s disciples and devotees, in expression of a common faith, they simply placed the portrait of Mother in the centre of the shrine for the wonder and worship of generations. The effect of the installation ceremony was electrifying. It evoked immediate emotional response. In the imagination of the assembled gathering, the ceremony became invested with the spiritual significance of an act of deification of Mother’s form, when it was thus installed within the sanctified precincts of a sacred shrine. The atmosphere vibrated with solemn jubilation. It was a memorable experience.

During earthly existence there are intervals of the sublime and the spiritual. Such an interval was when Divine Mother gave darsan after the gurupratishta ceremony. In the reverential salutation, with spontaneous outburst of devotion underlying the ceremony, representative singers from the various mandalies, sang a song of praise and glorification, specially composed for the occasion, full of philosophic meaning, poetic sentiment and melodious cadence. Mother’s spiritual radiance eclipsed the surrounding illumination. Mother was observed to be in solemn samadhi. Spiritual vibrations interpenetrated hearts and minds. Rich perfume of exotic incense, filled the mandir. Pancha arathi was performed. Bells, cymbals and conches in unison with human voices rose in splendor of sound wafting the devotion of the multitude to the lotus feet of Sadguru. Thereafter, the congregation moved out into the open yard for the hoisting of the flag emblazoned with the spiritual emblem of the Mandali. The symbolic representation on the flag depicted the spiritual career of the soul across the ocean of samsara to the peace of loftier realization.

Sadguru performed vigraha pratishta. Images of Sri Ramachandra and Sri Krishna were installed on either side of Sadguru’s portrait in the shrine. The images of the deities, carved out of black granites stones, depicted Sri Ramachandra with bow and arrow, and Sri Krishna with the famed murali or enchanting flute.

Presentation of addresses by various Mandalies and floral offerings by devotees followed. Sri Kudpi Srinivasa Shenoy, President, Kanara Chamber of Commerce, Mangalore, addressed the gathering. As Sadguru’s elder brother, the speaker was well suited to deal with the subject indicated by the title of the paper which he read on this occasion. His statements were based on vivid recollections. There is confirmation in the speech he read that spirituality in an exalted being like Sadguru is innate and that virtue is congenital. Sadguru’s divine life is a spontaneous efflorescence as distinguished from a meritorious life of cultivated elegance. His evaluations of Sadguru’s personality reflected the submissive attitude of pious reverence. He probably never associated with the sweet simplicity and ardent piety of his sister the inauguration of a mighty spiritual movement in the years ahead of them.

The distinctive feature of the teaching which has blossomed into an institution like this mandir is prem. This is also the most potent source of strength in the creation of a new society. There is no imposition of views, but the teaching extends its guidance to most personal and private matters in all relations of life. In the doctrine of prem, there is stress placed upon the divinity of man and not on theological abstractions. Sadguru teaches that by loving man we will learn to contemplate on the glories of God. learn to perform duties with detachment ; learn to pray in the drive and hurry of life ; learn to meditate during respite from work, during intervals of worldly occupations ; learn to enter the world of the puranas and intune the hearts and minds to their rhythm and message ; strengthen the religious conviction by meditation ; intentify devotion by surrender to Sadguru ; purify the mind by mastery of senses. Sadhana consists in practice of virtues. The courage for pursuing the path of spirituality is begotten by sadhana. Of sadhanas, meditation is supreme. Meditation gives control over mind and memory. It makes withdrawal possible from thoughts and concerns of distracted existence. It leads to awareness of the divine and brings about a state of constant loving attention to and dependence on the divine. Sadguru make all spots holy. Her benediction consecrates every life to the glory of God. This beautifying and chastening power was radiating in the mandir. There was a kind of mysticism in the air of the place where the mandir is situated which made everything beautiful to behold.

The shrine is built with modern materials, according to a style of architecture which has survived the innovations of successive ages and according to the rules of a living tradition. The architecture exemplifies a simplicity in technique which glorifies the work with a pure and integral faith. Classic themes are suggested rather than elaborated in the simplicity characterizing its decorative art. The flights of steps, fluted columns and dwarapalakas on either side-these common features get invested in the mind of the spectator with symbolic meanings appropriate to an ancient shrine. The installations are on niches, built as integral parts of the structure.

The shrine is topped by a travertine concrete slab which is resting on columns. In constructing the mandir, it was a happy thought which incorporated into its fabric, at the farther end of the huge prayer hall, at a focal and fundamental point, a separate shrine for the installation of the images of sadguru and the two deities. The precise location of the images illustrates the central position of the sadguru in the theological system. There are plans for interior decorative painting and symbolic architectural designs, which when accomplished, will result in exquisite works of art. The need for ritualistic worship in a life of piety and devotion was stressed by the observances in the shrine during the whole of the celebrations.

The shrine evoked a deep and simple spirit of prayer. Unsuspected heights of faith were revealed during the various rituals. Purity of heart, interior silence, spiritual solitude were experienced within the mandir. Life during the celebrations was a charming idyll. It was a puranic page glittering with spiritual experiences. It liberated us and made us belong to God purely. What were spoken and sung within the mandir answered to the deepest needs and aspirations of our spirits. We wished we could make an annual pilgrimage to this mandir, walking bare-foot across this beautiful country.

Everything in the prayer hall is vast and spiritual. In the rooms adjoining the prayer hall, the proportions are smaller and human. In these chambers too there was quiet. Through the open windows great clouds were seen sailing in the sky like ships. How close we were to Sadguru when absorbed by the tranquility of these chambers. Their silence and solitude are sacred to reminiscene. Now and then the huge bell from the shrine was ringing. The ensuing silence claimed us. It seemed to say : Pray and be quiet. Time stopped when once we were within the sacred precincts. By contemplation we could rediscover the foundations of being. The silence and solitude gave freedom from care. Mind and senses were stilled.

The night silence was profound in the mandir. A pure sky was overhead. The leaves were rustling. Trees were astir with prayer. Life was in the bud. Hope was young. There were flowers in the ridges and in the edges of the wood all round. On the lawns intersecting the mandir garden, there was richness of silvery sands. The mandir held the secret of knowledge for conquest of mysterious occult powers and the vision of God. Tranquility and detachment are two of the lessons it taught.

Delicate pink against deep blue was the colour of the day, sky matched against the patterns laid on the floor of the mandir, round the lighted lamp. In the prayer hall, before the shrine, all stood, royalty leading, and offered prayers and paid homage to divinity personified in Sadguru. During such prayers, the voice heard in the calm of thought, became thunderous in vibratory quality. Deep tranquility succeeded and settled upon the place. Some felt that with them spiritual life had only begun at that point of time. Between occasional showers, we saw the mandir bathed in a light usually not seen during that part of the year. The descending sun sometimes highlighted the entire structure against somber clouds of a dark overhanging sky. There was deep peace in those beautiful moments. The trellis work around enclosed a charmed spot wherefrom wafted a perfume as from a garden of roses.

Landscape helped the contemplative spirit. You could sing and pray and meditate in the hall, morning, noon or night. Only the shrine steps were not to be trodden by profane feet. Purificatory fast should precede ascent to the shrine. The shrine is accessible to purity and peace. Sadguru’s will is supreme good. Acts of virtue are prompted by it ; desire for sanctity is implanted by it. Her purifying presence alienated from everything in the world, but it also enlarged sympathies and intensified compassion.

The place was all colour with clouds and flowering shrubs and green margins. We knelt at the shrine before coming away with our minds full of visions. Wing after wing to this mandir was visualized-Bhajan, meditation, discourse, with awe-inspiring architecture, overpowering ritual, absorbing devotion. We were leaving the shrine when a big bank of clouds was crossing, and through the giant windows behind the shrine, those passing clouds suggested thrilling variations in the scenic setting of the mandir.

The bhajans made the common syntax of speech and song surrealistic. Apparently unrelated thoughts cohered in lovely tunes and seemed to be fragments of a moving symphony of sound. The songs during bhajans came up from the heart of the singers and half smothered them with ecstasy of utterance. Aflame with longing for salvation, they sang-not only for themselves but for humanity. These songs had a strange, mysterious power when sung in that context and setting, wherefrom the singers derived the richness of joy and peace.

During the bhajans there was deluge of sweet sounds and dulcet harmony. The songs were rendered sweet by the background of spiritual experience of the singers. By sheer soulful utterance they came near to achieving a sense of certitude and spiritual peace. In the songs and namavalis and especially in the orchestral bhajan of the Trichur mandali there was rich symbolism and nostalgia for rapturous identity of the individual soul with the universal spirit.

At the arathis also this congregation prayed together, with hands folded in entreaty and dedication. The arathi gave a great sense of the mysteries of our religion. There was a feeling of vital participation in a mysterious ritual. It provided the contemplative finale to an inspiring bhajan.  It gave a triumphant close to a paean of praise. The close of the arathi is strikingly significant with the word shanthi. The participants in the bhajan were at once united in an internal communion of souls as it were in some invisible shrine.

During these days it was beautiful to see Mother’s grace irradiating the lives of the people. Their actions became motivated by virtue. Their movements were harmonized by holiness.  Marvellous spontaneity marked their devotion. Golden and crimson and saffron, the evenings of the celebrations were ablaze with silver lamps, and burning bell-metal jyothis and with variety of shades of orange, red and mauve of innumerable flowers and leaves picked in high hills and distant fields for worship in the shrine.

The celebrations have liberated great spiritual forces. Through prayers, higher regions were traversed, soothing and calming currents of devotional music were sent out, genuine spiritual experiences, their pattern unchanged by flux of time, were regained by the participants in the bhajans and by the hearers of Sadguru’s discourses. The exposition of truth was emphasized and exalted by its visual exemplification in Sadguru’s divine person. The pious and the high-minded gathered for inner illumination and for graces of spirituality. The teachings of Sadguru became enshrined in the mandir. Here was another instance of the presence and operation of divine providence demonstrated in the conception and coming into existence of this mandir. Let us hope and pray that through this lives will be lifted and redeemed ; frontiers of individual ignorance will be pushed back by universal love ; mystical experience may be vouchsafed to intense striving of the earnest seeker ; fundamental wisdom experessed in the deeper religious experiences may be imbibed and propagated. We are richer already by twin gains-a desire for perfection and a message of peace, which the celebrations have already bestowed on us.

Mother’s teaching is not a doctrinal system. The controlling principles that have characterized the movement are devotion, meditation and love. One of her rare gifts to disciples is the inward spontaneity of belief in a life divine. She gives such spiritual insight which makes possible a life of clear consistency in which toleration for others can co-exist with inflexibility of conduct for oneself.

The convention of disciples, the congregational bhajans, the community life during the celebrations were superb and purifying disciplines. The conference was a signal success as regards the accommodation and hospitality offered by our hosts, the Trivandrum Mandali and the opportunity it offered for darsan of Mother surrounded by her disciples and devotees from various mandalis. Prayer prompted by devotion, petition for grace, heroic sacrifice and universal love were all  expressed in the uplifting resonance of the shrine bell, which was every day rung by an  ardent disciple of Mother who looked like the personification of sincerity.

Here was achieved a new synthesis, a higher plane of experience, a new religion growing out of the religious of today under the aegis of Sadguru, a religion of humanity. The absoluteness of her doctrine of prem gives intrinsic elevation to her teaching. All that attract, ennoble and uplift are fused in the classic mysticism which is the keynote of her personality and teaching.

“ Such is the Law which makes to righteousness
which none at last can turn aside or stray ;
The heart of it is love, the end of it
Is peace and consummation sweet.”
-Edwin Arnold

Divine Mother’s Ministry, Miracles and Reminiscences

October 20th, 2013

– I.V.Ranga Rao, M.A, M.Litt, I.E.S (Retd)

Ananya’s cintayanto mam ye janah parupasate

Tesam nityabhiyuktam yogaskhemam vahamy aham

Sarvadharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja

Aham tva sarvapapebhyo moksayisyami ma sucah

                                                                                                                                                   – Srimad Bhagavat Gita

Lord Krishna the Gitacharya adored as krishnam vande jagat gurum, gave Gitopadesh to Arjuna disillusioned and despondent caught between swadharma and attachment to kinsmen gurus etc. ready to kill and get killed in kuruskhetra battle. The Bhagavat Gita the Upanishad of Upanishads stands aloft, as the magnum opus and serves as ambrosia, inspiring life to the way worn aspirants. The core of the upadesha is one of surrender to the divine and the lord’s assurance of yoga kshemam to the votary (chapter 9-12 and chapter 18-66). This sharanagati tatva or doctrine of surrender again finds place in the Mahamantra given by Divine mother for the benefit of Humanity, suffering from the fires of samsara, out of the infinite compassion and mercy (on 1st Nov 1978) just before the self ordained Maha Samadhi. Divine Mother avers “This mantra is for the whole mankind. It is a vehicle of redemptive grace. It will bring good to the whole world. It is a golden regenerative and liberating mantra for all times to come, to whole of mankind.”

All life is yoga a sadhana for salvation and preparation for God vision. As such every event of life has a purpose. To accept all that happens in life as Divine dispensation, is surrender to Divine will.

All the above sayings of Divine Mother coming form Her lips as Pearls of wisdom highlight the need of total surrender with faith as the sheet anchor to the boat of bhakti.

Keep on the prayers and sadhana with all the intensity and absolute surrender to Mother. The family as a whole should rise up. ( Sree Tara Devi’s letter dated 22.05.1978)  The emphasis is on total surrender. Again, in another instance the need of surrender is extolled. The feeling of belonging to Divine and an attitude of complete surrender to Her merciful dispensation is the means of attaining peace. This should be achieved to take firm roots, so that a firm tranquility of mind can be established. Aspire and be blessed. (Sree Tara Devi’s letter 15. 4.1980)

A devotee can easily get over all hurdles and obstacles of life by sincere and deep prayers. Our beloved Mother is our support and help at all times of our need. A united prayer by all together in a family is very much required. Have faith and pray. Sincere and heart-felt prayers have never gone unanswered. But faith is the criterion. Finally leave everything to Her and be at peace. This is how a bhakta maintains peace-of mind in this world of up’s and downs. (Sree Tara Devi’s letter 6 May 1979.)

ASSURANCES

Divine Mother Sri Rama Devi made an assurance: children think not that Mother is here, only when she is in the saguna form. Mother is eternal. Even after leaving the upadhi, Mother will be with you. She will be manifest Herself here (Saktinagar) in a special way.

Be cheerful and thought free. Enjoy the peace of self resignation. Surrender yourself completely to Her, the Mother of Universe. Remember your true nature and Mother’s Divinity. Do not look upon your body as your self.

You had innumerable bodies in the past. They have all perished, but have you perished? You are still there as the solid existence. You are imperishable, one with Divine Mother. Imprint upon the mind this truth and keep your mind stable and serene. Remain linked to the Mother always.

There is nothing superior to bhakti. Everybody everything leaves you one day or the other but Mother never leaves you. Knowing this truth, should you not give your entire heart to Mother Divine? On another occasion Divine Mother assured total protection “ have faith that I am always before you, behind you around you even helping you”. This is the height of protection offered to us a ‘personal kavacha’ to guard us.

MIRACLES:

Divine Mother warns sadhakas against miracles or ‘siddhis.’ In some cases those manifest as one advances in ‘Sadhaka Vritti’ and are as a rule to be avoided, as advancement in spiritual sadhana is hindered. In modern times however, people are crazy about miracles to offer quick fix solutions to the worldly problems. Those tend to have greater appeal. Not withstanding the above, certain events occurred with us coming under the realm of miracles (some select events) in our personal lives which are narrated with a view to cement faith and augment bhakti in Divine Mother. Those are to be taken only in that stride. The potency of ‘mahamantra’ gained great significance with us when my grandson competed for the 3 KM running race in his school sports and won the prize by chanting the “mahamantra” when his seniors also dropped in the middle of the event. A junior (in age) thus could do the feat to the surprise of everybody.

There are another instances of experience when my grandson was writing his school exam he got stuck up with certain question. He was at a fix. He uttered the ‘mahamantra’ and got the answers which helped him to write the paper creditably and to satisfaction. What is not possible with Divine intervention? There is nothing like impossible for Divine Mother’s children provided we have utter faith and sincerity in prayers.

There was another case of Divine Mother’s graceful intervention. If your call is genuine, emerging from the bottom of the heart, She will rush to your aid. This was her declaration. It happened in New Delhi once our domestic LPG cylinder got exhausted and on demand a delivery boy came to deliver the refill at 7 PM one day. His arrival was totally unexpected. My wife was all alone. In big cities crimes are common and one has to be guarded. She got nervous and prayed to Divine Mother. ‘I am all alone’ and  I can not open the almirah and take money in presence of a stranger’. So saying, she brought money. Lo! In a few minutes time, she palpably felt the presence of Divine Mother clad in white saree, walking up and down, as though giving company to her. Meanwhile the gas cylinder was delivered and the boy left. With great relief and sense of gratitude, countless thanks were offered to Divine Mother for the timely assistance.

Some time back, in response to a request for a STD facility to our domestic telephone, we were asked to suggest a number to be registered for personal identification (Password) requirement. This meant working of permutations and combinations and getting a combination acceptable to the department using all our intelligence. For two days we all worked but no avail. In a fit of disgust we left the exercise. Next day how ever when I was coming out after morning ablations I got intuitively a particular combination number. I lost no time to contact the telephone department with the discovery. Lo! it came to be acceptable immediately imagine the excitement.

In 1984 when Smt. Indira Gandhi former Prime Minister was assassinated, there was social tension in the capital, marked by sporadic violence. I was to attend the office as usual. At 4 PM however my boss rang me up and enquired why I came to office taking all the risk. He advised me to leave the office early to avoid risk and untoward problems. He wanted to depute his PA to escort me to the campus, where we stay. But that was not to happen for some reason. Atlast, I had to leave office alone. The whole of Rajpath area looked forlorn and deserted. I prayed to divine Mother for safety. A little later, I saw PA of my boss coming fast to overtake my vehicle. He joined and escorted me to the campus and left. I thanked Divine Mother profusely for the benevolent assistance got. Next day however (out of curiosity) in course of conversation I broached the topic about the PA’s assistance to me the previous evening. To my surprise he replied that he left early as he came from a long distance. I was totally dumb founded and concluded it was none other than the Divine Mother’s invisible hand that worked the miracle to offer protection out of total concern for Her creation.

On 16th Dec 1984, I was proceeding to Delhi mandali on my  two wheeler, to attend the Sunday weekly bhajan along with my wife and daughter at Sri. B V Holla’s house as usual. It so happened that on the way in Andrew’s gunj a speeding car hit our vehicle. We all fell down unconscious almost instantaneously with the engine still in motion. A passenger proceeding to Delhi airport noticed acted as a good Samaritan and stopped his car at the accident spot. He noted the number of the hit and run car and rescued us from the vehicle. He lodged a police complaint later. An onlooker for the neighbourhood rushed with drinking water which helped us for our early recovery. Providentially we escaped with minor injuries and after medical aid with help we returned home. In those moments of suspense we could feel Divine hands at work in diverse ways to protect us. The accident could have been fatal and tragic (considering the severe impact on our vehicle) and miraculously we were all saved by Divine Mother. We always remember that fatal date with shudder every year and even today.

Divine Mother’s sacred Kumkum:

Divine Mother’s sacred Kumkum serves as “Raksha” many times. In our experience Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam and AkhandaNama Japa chanting is done in the mandir or singly in the houses in congregation. Each “Namavali” uttered and pooja offered thereby to Divine Mother carries with it a lot of power, which confers a variety of benefits as desired by the aspirants, if done with sincerity. That is the reason in case of ailments in our house we offer Divine Mother’s kumkum first in a routine way. In this connection certain experiences are given below.

Recently our domestic servant girl was the beneficiary. She was to be married to a relative boy she liked. But her parents however were not agreeable and there was stiff opposition. She was totally depressed. When she told of her predicament we offered her the Divine Mother’s Kumkum with prayer. Wonder of wonders her parents later relented and the marriage took place as she desired. Later she came with all smiles and a sense of gratitude after the marriage to thank us.

Again we found from experience that whenever marriage invitations extended to us the parties were offered the sacred “Kumkum” uttering “Mahamantra”. The marriages used to come out well, without any obstacle or untoward happenings.

Further there were instances when the sacred “Kumkum” exhibited curative properties. Once after Saktinagar trip my self and my wife returned to our place via Chennai to see my aged cousin. It happened that my cousin was suffering from a prolonged cough and was restless. No drugs could cure him. We felt we chose the wrong time for the personal visit. My sister-in-law poured her agony about the aliment, while my cousin could not talk.

I, involuntarily went near him and touched him without meaning anything and offered the sacred “Kumkum” as a routine. To our surprise the cough subsided and totally and later. He wrote to me couple of days later that and how that the vibrations produced by touch he received along with the “Kumkum” cured him totally. He suggested that every time on our way back from Saktinagar we should visit him and stay in his house.

One day our neighbour’s child was unwell. The child was restless with fever and crying with out stop. Medicines could not cure. Casually my wife went to her and the mother narrated her agony. There upon my wife applied “Kumkum” to the child and her mother. The child was free from fever and relieved of the problem.

Another incident related to a serious one. After Saktinagar trip, we were to dash emergently to Hyderabad to see a relative ailing in hospital. Doctors gave up hopes. She was gasping for breadth, unable to open eyes even. She had not taken any diet. The close relatives were all worried and concerned. My wife applied “Kumkum” to her and touched the entire body. Within minutes we found that the lady could open her eyes slowly and recognize us. Later after persuasion, she accepted some liquid diet. When we were to depart she could talk. Later we visited her many times after her recovery.

There is another moving personal incident. Years ago in Bhopal my grand daughter had non stop loose motions one midnight. My son-in-law was away on official tour. At that part of the night getting neighbour’s help or Doctors visit were out of question. She administered the available medicines in her house and those were of no avail. Forlorn and helpless she lost her nerve and rushed to the pooja room, sat before Divine Mother, weeping bitterly and praying all the while, applying Divine Mother’s “Kumkum” to the child.

The compassionate Mother instantaneously answered her prayers and within minutes to the astonishment of all motions stopped and the child recovered fully and slept. My daughter thanked Divine Mother profusely in gratitude.

I conclude this article with the clarion call of Divine Mother Smt. Tara Devi “This is the time for us to work. It is now that we have to make peace, Bliss and Divine knowledge imparted by Divine Mother, our own. What is given to us by her with much live and compassion should remain with us for ever and ever. It is not to be neglected or lost. But to assimilate it and digest it, work we must. Deep and concentrated meditation in addition to other exercises of sadhana is of more importance at this juncture of time. For the successful accomplishment of our part we have to pray to her very sincerely, so that the desired results will be forthcoming as expected by Her. If we could do this and live up to Her expectation, I don’t think there is greater blessedness than this” (Letter dated 6th April 1979) Let us all rise up to the expectation is my humble prayer.
